Statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), one of two major plastic surgery organizations in the US, shows that breast augmentation has lost its briefly-held title as the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the US, falling to number 2 in 2011, after liposuction. According to the ASAPS statistics, there were about 9.2 million cosmetic procedures performed in the US last year, including surgical and nonsurgical procedures. Overall, surgical procedures increased by almost a full percentage point over 2010, but nonsurgical procedures declined by almost 2%, something the organization contributes to a desire for lasting results. The full top five list of surgical procedures is:
- Liposuction 325,332 procedures
- Breast augmentation 316848 procedures
- Abdominoplasty 149,410 procedures
- Eyelid surgery 147,540 procedures
- Breast lift 127,054 procedures
Another noteworthy statistic: about two-thirds of women who had breast augmentation received silicone gel breast implants, which surgeons say indicates that surgeons and patients have fully accepted the safety of this type of breast implants.
