Gynecomastia is the clinical term for abnormally large breasts in men. There is usually no known cause, and the condition can start as early as puberty. Some lifestyle choices like steroid and marijuana use can cause gynecomastia, but so can medical issues like weight gain and hormonal imbalance. If you suffer from gynecomastia, board certified Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. David Bottger can help you correct the condition.
Gynecomastia is usually treated with a combination of liposuction and direct tissue excision. In some cases, excess skin is also removed. The incision is made at the edge of the areola, which leaves only a minor scar.
Good candidates for gynecomastia treatment should:
- Have realistic and clear goals
- Be in generally good health
- Have firm skin that will tighten after surgery
- Not use anabolic steroids or marijuana
The procedure only takes about two hours, and you’ll be able to return to work within a week. Most patients can resume all normal activities within a month, though we may ask that you wear a form-fitting vest for up to three weeks to aid the recovery process.
If you suffer from unusually large male breasts, please contact Dr. David Bottger today to schedule a consultation. We serve patients in Philadelphia and throughout the region.
