Breast augmentation is a procedure that can be performed in many ways to help you get the results you desire. One of the important options is where your incision is going to be placed. Dr. David A. Bottger offers three different incisions for your breast augmentation, all the options endorsed by the American Society of Plastic Surgery. These options are:
- Inframammary (in the crease under the breast)
- Periareolar (under the lower border of the areola, the colored area around the nipple)
- Axillary (in the armpit)
Which incision is right for you depends on many factors. Inframammary is the most common because it allows good visibility of the pocket made for the breast implant. It is also well concealed in women with a well-defined breast crease before breast augmentation. It can be used with breast implants of all types and sizes. Periareolar incisions also give good visibility of the breast implant pocket, but may not be appropriate for all types and sizes of breast implants if you have small areolas. In the past it was reported that periareolar incisions were associated with higher rates of breastfeedingdifficulties and changes in nipple sensitivity, but more recent research indicates the rates for these complications are about the same for all incisions. The axillary incision is generally only appropriate for inserting saline breast implants or very small silicone gel breast implants. If you desire this incision, ask to see examples of the doctor’s work using it, because creating symmetry between breasts with the axillary incision can be challenging.
