There are many different types of breast implants, with different fill materials, surface types, and shapes. Breast implantsmay be filled with either saline liquid (salt water) or silicone gel. Both have been approved for use in the US as being safe and effective, and the differences are largely a matter of patient preference. Saline breast implants are less expensive and more flexible surgically–being inserted via a smaller incision. Silicone breast implants, are more expensive and because they are filled before insertion, they are less flexible surgically–they may not always be appropriate for all breast augmentation incisions. All breast implants are encased in a solid silicone shell, but that shell can be either smooth or textured. The surface type may affect the performance of the breast implant in the pocket. Breast implants come in many shapes. Basically, they are divided into shaped or anatomic and round breast implants, but there are several different options in both categories. The exact shape of the anatomic implants varies by manufacturer, and some offer multiple shapes. Round breast implants also vary on the height of the breast implant for volume. This is called the profile of the implant, and may be useful for helping women achieve the postoperative breast shape they desire.
